Pete and I just visited our old stomping grounds, Toronto (cue the song Memories, played at half speed). We hung out quite a bit at the supercool, super space-age condo of our friends Robbie and Walter. Robbie is an incredibly talented graphic designer that I used to work with. Anyway, the guys' passion for '60s and '70s minimalism is apparent in every room, every detail. If anyone deserves to be chosen to live on a space station (you know, when the Earth finally blows up), it's these two. I'm sure they'll bring some style to the joint. I have an addiction. Okay, I have TWO addictions. The first one is potato chips. The second one is second-hand shopping. I have yet to find a Monet at my local thrift store, but that doesn't mean I haven't found treasure. I'm sure I'll keep you abreast of my finds as time goes on. Actually, you can count on that, since I have a compulsive need to brag about them. Click on 'Read More' to see more evidence of my thrifting adventures...
When I was hanging out in Kingston, Ontario, I hung out with my pal Marian, who lives a short trip away in Harrowsmith. She and her partner Dave are artists who are livin' the dream (my dream, or at least one of them): they live in a beautiful country house where they make beautiful things. Marian is a painter and metalsmith, and Dave is a gemologist who makes jewelry. Click on 'Read More' for a peek at their house, studios, and work...
When Pete and I were in the TDot, we checked on our semi-detached house, which is rented by our friend Jessica. For as long as I've known her, Jessica has had a wonderfully quirky, spot-on fashion sense, so I'm not surprised that it translates to her home environment. She's definitely done our place proud, so I asked if I could take a few pictures. Lucky for us, she was kind enough to oblige. Have a peek at Jess's sweet style...
Ever been to Kingston, Ontario? Oh, you really must go. Then again, I'm biased, because it's my hometown. It also just happens to be the hometown of Sir John A. MacDonald, Canada's first Prime Minister. If you ever do visit, check out Bellevue House, where Sir John lived with his wife, the tragic Isabella. It's a charming example of 1840s architecture, with plenty of historical detail and design inspiration. For those who can't make it, don't worry, I've snapped a few pictures. Come, let's take a Victorian Turkish-carpet ride back in time, shall we?
When Pete and I moved from Toronto to Vancouver three years ago, we came with virtually nothing (exception: a small but sassy Boston named Rudie, pictured above). Thanks to thrift stores, Craigslist, and IKEA, we quickly made our new 700-square foot condo a home. I call our decorating style 'Pop of Colour Gone Wild,' the result of my desire to counteract the pre-existing drab brownish walls. Come in, have a peek...
Does anyone blog anymore? Is blogging so 2002? Maybe I'm the wide-legged raver pants of the web: so behind, trend-wise, that I'm cutting-edge. So before you wrinkle your nose at my posts about art and design, food, pets, and, you know, life! (okay, you can roll your eyes at that), just remember: this stuff is ahead of the curve, people. You just don't know it yet.
